Books still reign: Iraqi scholar warns internet no substitute for deep study

Iraqi scholar Ayatollah Sayyid Muhammad Taqi al-Modarresi has called on seminary students to return to books and pursue deep study, warning that the internet cannot replace books in building a solid intellectual foundation.

Hawzah News Agency- Speaking at his weekly ethics class for seminary students in the holy city of Karbala, Ayatollah Modarresi called for reviving the relationship with books and strengthening the role of reading, warning against the shortcomings of relying entirely on the internet as a source of knowledge and culture.

He urged a return to books and deep study to draw on knowledge and sciences and to consolidate divine teachings, noting that modern tools — despite their speed in transmitting information — cannot replace books in building a firm and comprehensive scientific outlook and intellectual and cultural foundation.

Ayatollah Modarresi also called on seminary students to make it their concern to embody the culture of guidance in society and spread awareness and true knowledge among the people, stressing the civilizational importance of this great practical concept in Islam.

The Iraqi scholar cited the testament of the Prophet of God (PBUH) to Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (AS) when he dispatched him to Yemen, saying: "O Ali, do not fight anyone until you have invited them [to Islam]. By God, if God guides a man through you, it is better for you than all that the sun rises and sets upon — and you will have his allegiance, O Ali."

He emphasized that guiding a single person through sincere invitation and awareness is worth more than all the material riches of the world, underscoring the enduring value of spreading true knowledge and guidance in society.
